There are many volunteer opportunities in the San Diego worthy of our attention. In addition there are some links at the bottom for those outside the San Diego area. If you have a favorite volunteer opportunity to share, please let us know.

* Home Start - Home Start provides services to children living in poverty who require immediate, comprehensive solutions to nsure their safety and healthy development. Their mission is to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and communities. They offer a variety of services including mental health therapies, financial and employment services, and safe housing for homeless pregnant or parenting young women. They have multiple volunteer opportunities available. See http://www.home-start.org/
Home Start is currently looking for a group of individuals available to paint office space and residential units at one of our Maternity Shelter Program sites. The Materntiy Shelter Program provides safe and secure supportive housing with intensive case management services for pregnant and parenting young women and their dependent children. These women are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and, through the program, develop the skills necessary to live independently while in a stable and safe home. The residential site is located in Normal Heights and includes 6 living units and one office. A fresh coat of paint will surely brighten the lives of the mothers and children! ,* 2-1-1 San Diego Disaster Volunteers - As we ready ourselves for the height of San Diego's wildfire season, we are offering multiple training opportunities for our volunteer respondeers. Each has been posted as an Opportunity on www.211volunteer.org and we urge you to consider and sign up for one of the below:

  • Call Center Supervision - Policies, Practices and Exercises for those interested in developing as Call Center Unit Leaders and also learning about the newer technologies and organizational structures for our Disaster Volunteer Call Center. When: Wednesday, August 27, 2014, 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
  • DRT: An Introduction and Orientation to 2-1-1 San Diego's Disaster Services - for friends, relatives or co-workers looking to join our corps of disaster volunteer responders. WHEN: Wednesday, September 3, 2014, 5:30-7 PM
  • Responding Safely in Wildfire County - a session with CAL FIRE Captain Kendal Bortisser, Public Information Officer, who will share important safety tips and practices when "answering the call" for 2-1-1 San Diego - or just moving about a landscape caught in a major wildfire. Space is limited and reserved for our disaster volunteers. WHEN: Wednesday, September 10, 6-7:30 PM
  • Back to School for the DRT - An all-day exercise in which each volunteer would spend two hours at 2-1-1, one
    placing and another hour taking tightly scripted phone calls. WHEN: Date and Time TBD

Legacy Corps - Legacy Corps is a very special volunteer opportunity and way to give back to the community through national service. Legacy Corps helps Veteran and military families throughout San Diego, providing support and respite in-home. Volunteer members provide companionship visits so caregivers are able to take a break. See this Legacy Corps flyer with some of the details about Legacy Corps service. There is a 12-month commitment and training is included. Members who are accepted receive a living allowance during their service. They are holding an orientation for new volunteers on August 6, 2015, at 9 am at the County Operations Center and they will be accepting applications and beginning the interview process at that time. Project Wildlife - Project Wildlife has several volunteer opportunities that may be of interest to your employees and retirees. Broad categories for volunteerism are discussed on our website here: http://www.projectwildlife.org/volunteer.php. Project Wildlife will begin recruiting volunteers again in January 2014. Anyone interested is encouraged to submit an online volunteer application: https://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/ap?AP=1344527359. A few volunteer opportunities to highlight are:

  • Hotline Volunteers: These individuals are trained to manage phone calls from the public, direct people on how to safely rescue an animal in distress, provide general wildlife fact knowledge and coordinate animal transporters as needed. Most members of our Hotline team cover their shifts from home and no animal contact is made in this position.
  • Event and Fundraising Volunteers: Project Wildlife holds a number of events each year that require a wide range of volunteer support roles to be filled. There are administrative activities as outlined on our website, or other roles that involve direct support at the events.
  • Triage Center Volunteers: Animal Assistants interact with medical staff and members of the public, and care for resident patients at the Triage Center.
  • Other opportunities:
    • Transport Team: participate in on-call transportation of injured or sick wildlife.
    • Cage Team: Repair or build enclosures to be used for wildlife rehabilitation.

Greatest Generation Naval Museum - The Greatest Generation Naval Museum Veteran Outreach program will initially be providing comfort food for evening meals for our most seriously Wounded Warriors at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Voices for Children - Voices for Children helps abused, neglected and abandoned children in foster care through a network of Court Appointed Special Advocates. These deeply committed volunteers are recruited, trained and superviced by Voices for Children staff. Empowered by the courts to advocate for children who have become dependents of the San Diego Juvenile Court, volunteers guide their case children through the complex and confusing foster care system in order to serve the child's best interest. You can help by volunteering or a monetary donation. Please call at 858-569-2019, FAX at 858-569-7151 or drop by at 2851 Meadowlark Drive, San Diego, CA 92123.

Shakti Rising - A recovery center for young women in San Diego is is need of your donation. This is a innovative empowerment program incorporating counseling, community activism, health education, life and career skills classes.  The program assists women ages 15-25 overcoming addictions, abuses and dis-empowerment about their minds, bodies and spirits via a holistic approach to healing. If interested, contact

Engineers Without Borders - Nonprofit humanitarian group established to partner with developing communities worldwide to improve quality of life.  This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects.  There are Chapters in both Los Angeles and San Diego.  If interested contact Delia Meraz at

USS Midway - Is looking for volunteers to serve as Docents, Education, Restoration, Safety, Reception and Curatorial Departments. No experience is necessary but you must be 18 or older, have team spirit, able to honor a regular monthly commitment and submit a volunteer application. If interested go to the Museum Web Site or contact the Volunteer Office at mailto:lswitzer@midway,org.
